Unione Zero Master Plan

MilanoSesto / Foster + Partners

Key features of the proposed public infrastructure include a promenade, a 9-meter-wide linear space rejuvenating via Acciaierie, and linking the station square with the city center on pedestrian and cycle paths. Along Via Acciaierie, a potential student square may emerge to complement adjacent buildings. Private settlements will be supported by an orthogonal road network, known as the side streets facilitating accessibility while connecting the city center with the Unione urban park and historical assets like OMEC, T3, and Trenolaminatoio. Construction of a bridge station will span Piazza Primo Maggio and the new square on the Cittą Salute side. This 89x18-meter walkway, suspended above existing tracks, will seamlessly link formerly segregated city areas, featuring a modern iron and glass structure with a photovoltaic roof powering the station and serving as a panoramic observation point overlooking the urban park. Almost 1,600 trees will be planted in the entire Ex-Falck area which will absorb 48 tons of CO2 every year. Half of the energy used will be produced from renewable sources, while all the buildings will comply with the LEED Gold and Platinum, LEED Neighborhood Development, and WELL certification criteria. The energy needs of the area will be reduced by 30% compared to traditional building systems, thus avoiding the release of 5,500 tons of CO2 into the area every year.
