Scalo di Porta Romana Master Plan

Coima SGR SpA / SOM

The old railway yard transforms into a new urban precinct, and the disused Porta Romana railway station becomes a key component of an urban regeneration project inspired by principles of sustainability, with a scope in terms of quality, size, and purpose comparable to the best urban interventions in Europe. The plan provides for pedestrian and cycle circulation only, with access to underground car parks from the existing road network. Specific objectives and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) were developed focusing on four key areas. Firstly, decarbonization aims to create an efficient and low-impact district in terms of CO2 emissions. Secondly, circularity targets the establishment of a circular district where resources are recovered and enhanced through virtuous cycles. Thirdly, resilience to climate change seeks to create a neighborhood capable of mitigating and adapting to climate change effects. Finally, health and well-being objectives aim to promote a healthy, inclusive neighborhood that fosters social inclusion, participation, and the overall well-being of its residents. The area will be connected to some of the main university centers of the city through the S9 line and the emerging Circle line of Milan's suburban railway service.
