New Bocconi Campus

Luigi Bocconi Commercial University / SANAA

The new Urban Campus for Bocconi University, situated near Milan's city center adjacent to the existing university, covers multiple buildings with distinct functions: a teaching and administration complex composed of interconnected cells, dormitories, and a recreation center. These structures are situated within a new park accessible to both university members and the public. The teaching and administration building's volumes are interconnected, facilitating student and faculty movement between cells. Internally, the architecture emphasizes permeability, characterized by a sequence of columns, transparent rooms, and integrated trees. The park includes its own courtyards, created by porticos that provide shelter to garden pathways from sun and rain. The buildings are equipped with high-efficiency photovoltaic panels on their roofs, generating over 1,200 kW of nominal power. Energy savings are ensured using heat pumps and refrigeration units to balance heating requirements across the buildings. Energy efficiency is enhanced through building envelope consisting of an external skin in expanded metal anodized aluminum followed by a second layer in glass and aluminum with thermal break. An advanced lighting management system with automatic brightness control is implemented throughout the space. Out of the total 35,000 m2 area, 17,000 m2 are dedicated to greenery, featuring native species such as oak, white hornbeam, and black poplar, in alignment with Ravizza Park's flora.
