BEIC European Library

Fondazione BEIC / Onsite Studio SRL

The new BEIC building, very rational especially for the clarity of distribution of the spaces, will have a total surface area of approximately 30,000 square meters. The ground floor of the building will be an open space, supporting two identical main volumes measuring 27 x 75 meters in footprint and 33 meters in height. These volumes consist of six above-ground floors and two underground levels. The exterior will primarily feature glass and metal materials, while the interior will incorporate wooden elements. Connected to the main building is a third pavilion housing the Imaginarium, a section dedicated to children with two levels for games, experiments, and performances, along with an auditorium. The Auditorium is an underground cylindrical space capable of accommodating 300 people for various events while ensuring optimal acoustic conditions. Within one of the main volumes, called the Forum, there will be multifunctional rooms for consulting materials and other activities open to the public. The other volume will house Departments, including documentary sections, digital collections, reading rooms, offices, meeting rooms, and workstations. The northern volume's top will feature a large greenhouse, while the southern volume will open onto a terrace accommodating an all-day open reading room. The robotic warehouse, capable of holding 2.5 million volumes, will be located centrally underground, shielded from natural light, and sealed for fire protection and dust prevention, serving all areas of the library.
