Refuge de Barroude

Nestled within the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Pyrenees National Park, the Barroude mountain refuge is being rebuilt ten years after an accidental fire destroyed its predecessor. The new structure will serve as a vital stop on the Haute Route des Pyrénées for hikers and as a reception and support center for National Park staff. The design balances public accessibility with privacy, divided into functional areas for visitors and refuge staff. The conceptual approach for the Barroude refuge is rooted in two key elements: the Terrier and the Cairn. The Terrier symbolizes warmth, security, and integration, while the Cairn represents a landmark, a guiding point built from natural elements. Together, these ideas shape the refuge’s design—nestling into the topography, with a harmonious blend of materials such as stone, wood, and aluminium, signaling a protective haven amidst the Pyrenean peaks. The building’s location takes advantage of the existing topography, minimizing earthworks while ensuring the preservation of the local flora and fauna. With bioclimatic design principles, the compact structure blends seamlessly into its landscape, featuring a large planted roof and recycled aluminium exterior that shields the building from harsh winds. The layout creates a natural flow from open, communal spaces to the more private dormitories, ensuring a balance between openness and privacy. The refuge’s sustainable design prioritizes low-carbon materials, prefabrication, and local stone to reduce environmental impact. Energy-efficient systems, including solar panels and biomass heating, further minimize its carbon footprint, while the use of a nearby spring for water supplies and natural wastewater treatment ensures minimal ecological disruption. The Barroude refuge is a true testament to environmentally conscious architecture, offering both safety and serenity for hikers while preserving the majesty of the surrounding mountains.
