Winter Cabin on Mount Kanin

OFIS Architekti

Set high on Mount Kanin in the Julian Alps, this striking cliff-side cabin is anchored into the rock, combining resilient design with breathtaking views. Accessible only to experienced climbers, this unique winter cabin assembled off-site and was transported by helicopter due to the high-altitude challenges and extreme weather conditions. Designed to withstand freezing temperatures, heavy rain, and even avalanches, the structure’s timber interior and thick glass walls ensure durability while maximizing natural light and panoramic views. The compact refuge features three horizontal wooden platforms serving as beds and accommodates up to nine climbers. One of the cabin’s short sides projects outward, opening through a large glass window that frames the stunning rocky landscape. Partly cantilevered, the cabin rests lightly on the rock, with cables suspending it securely. The interior is sober and minimal, emphasizing simplicity and comfort, making it an ideal shelter for climbers seeking adventure amidst the Alps, Soca Valley, and Adriatic Sea. Brought to life through donations and volunteer efforts, the Kanin Winter Cabin embodies both resilience and aesthetic harmony with nature. It has become a cherished landmark for climbers seeking a rest stop that combines safety, comfort, and unforgettable alpine vistas. More than a cabin, it offers a unique perspective on the rugged beauty of the Julian Alps.
