Alpine Shelter Skuta

OFIS Architekti

Set below Mountain Skuta in the Kamnik Alps, this new bivouac replaces a 50-year-old shelter, addressing the extreme climatic conditions that challenge architects and climbers alike. Designed to withstand harsh weather, temperature shifts, and rugged terrain, the bivouac is a vital refuge for mountaineers, offering accommodation for up to eight individuals. The structure consists of three modules, facilitating transport and space organization: an entrance area with storage and a small food preparation zone, a communal sleeping and socializing area, and a bunk sleeping space. The outer shell is made from Rieder thin glass fiber concrete elements, chosen for their durability and aesthetic appeal, ensuring a minimal environmental impact while providing panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Designed with input from students and guided by experienced architects and engineers, the bivouac's modular form allows for efficient assembly in challenging locations. Installed in a single day using helicopter transport, the shelter is anchored lightly to the ground, preserving the natural environment. Ultimately, this project reflects the dedication of over sixty volunteers, embodying the spirit of mountain culture and providing a lasting refuge for climbers in Slovenia's beautiful wilderness.
