Tungestolen Hiking Cabin

Snohetta

Located in Luster, Norway, this collection of pentagonal tourist cabins offers breathtaking views of the Jostedalen glacier while providing a comfortable shelter for hikers. Designed by Snøhetta, the cabins respond to the region's challenging weather, ensuring guests enjoy their stay throughout the summer and autumn months. The project emerged after the original Tungestølen Tourist Cabin was destroyed by cyclone Dagmar in 2011, prompting local efforts to rebuild. Snøhetta's winning design features nine robust cabins with wooden glue-lam frames, clad in ore pine and covered with sheets of cross-laminated timber (CLT). The cabins’ beak-like shapes help deflect strong winds, making the site accessible for both seasoned hikers and families. The main cabin serves as a communal space with a high ceiling, large windows for panoramic views, and a cozy lounge centered around a stone fireplace, accommodating approximately 30 visitors for overnight stays.
