Nestled at 3,026 meters above sea level, this new refuge is thoughtfully situated in a natural depression within the rugged Alpine terrain. The design, inspired by a slender “rock peak,” creates a striking presence in the landscape while minimizing its footprint by stacking functional spaces. The structure spans six levels, with sloping facades clad in copper, shaped by the elements to harmonize with its environment. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a spacious “stube” primarily crafted from fir wood, featuring large tables and panoramic views of surrounding peaks. The refuge accommodates 50 bunk beds on the upper floors and offers various support facilities below. Built on a prefabricated concrete base, the structure incorporates untreated brushed fir for interiors, with energy-efficient systems including solar collectors. The copper exterior, a nod to the region's mining history, has aged to blend harmoniously with the rocky environment. Constructed over two summers, the project involved prefabricated elements transported via a specialized cable car, minimizing the need for helicopters.
