Bivacco Camardella

Progetto CMR / Faces Engineering

The Bivouac Edoardo Camardella, located at 3,360 meters on the Rutor Glacier, stands as a tribute to Edoardo Camardella, a young freerider and ski instructor tragically lost in an avalanche on Mont Blanc in 2019. Edoardo, known affectionately as “Edo,” was a beacon of passion for the mountains and a driving force behind the La Thuile Trail. His legacy as a sportsman and mentor lives on through this eco-sustainable shelter, which serves as both a memorial and a functional refuge for mountaineers. Conceived by the Fondazione Bivacco Edoardo Camardella, Progetto CMR, and the Municipality of La Thuile, the bivouac’s design reflects Edoardo’s spirit and connection to his friend Luca Martini, who also perished in the avalanche. The structure, which was completed in September 2022, is composed of two blocks symbolizing the duo. It features modern, lightweight materials and solar panels for energy autonomy, embodying sustainability and innovation. Strategically placed near significant mountaineering landmarks, the bivouac offers a safe haven with stunning views of Mont Blanc. The structure provides accommodations for six people and includes amenities such as underfloor heating, LED lighting, USB charging points, and a 360-degree web-cam. Despite its remote location, accessible via glacier routes requiring technical equipment, the Bivouac Edoardo Camardella offers a unique and enduring tribute to Edoardo’s love for the mountains and his community. Key technical contributions were made by Progetto CMR, Faces Engineering, and the Politecnico di Milano, while construction was overseen by Gualini and Barailler Edilizia.
