Bivak Na Prehodavcih

Premica Architects

After World War I, Italy constructed an extensive alpine fortification system in what is now former Yugoslavia, leaving behind remnants of military infrastructure. Nearly a century later, Premica Architects reimagined one of these bunkers as a modern alpine shelter for mountaineers. The bivouac is strategically placed on concrete foundations that rest on the original bunker structure, preserving the historical significance of the site. Supply roads and paths from the past remain largely intact, now serving as marked hiking trails that provide easy access to the stunning alpine landscape. Prefabricated in a workshop and transported via helicopter, the cross-laminated timber panels create a cozy yet robust space that embraces the simplicity of alpine life. Without running water or electricity—except for a small solar panel powering a single light—the design strikes a balance between comfort and environmental sensitivity, highlighting the relationship between human needs and the natural world in a delicate ecosystem.
